"There's not enough room to post all our policies"
- By Joe R.
Orlando Florida Store#4332
Submitted on Mar 31, 2008
I spent almost 3 hours shopping Walmart with my wife and 4 month-old daughter on a Sunday night. It was 11:45 PM when we left after almost an hour in line at the register. We had two carts full of groceries and the baby was crying when we exited the store and an employee asked for the receipt. I politely said, No thanks, and kept walking. The employee grabbed my cart and said he wanted to see my receipt. You can't leave the store without showing your receipt, he claimed.
My wife had twice changed the baby's diaper inside the store. Each time, she took a fully-loaded cart with her into the ladies room, no problem.
I loudly asked the employee if he was accusing me of theft. Three other employees came running and now I'm surrounded by four employees all talling me at the same time, Sir, you have to show your receipt, it's store policy.
Within moments, a sheriff's deputy approached and asked what was going on. The employees say, he won't show his receipt. I told the deputy it was true, then I point out my wife is hysterically freaked-out and my baby is crying, can I take them to the car and then come back and resolve this? I just paid $516.00 and they're accusing me of theft.
At this point, the employees say they're not accusing me of theft and not detaining me, I just can't leave. The deputy tells me I have to show the receipt--at which point my wife grabs the receipt and gives it to the Walmart employee. They look at the receipt for all of 3 seconds, hand it back, and we go home.
I called the store to complain to the manager. I spoke with Manager Sharon and was told that they have total right to stop anyone and everyone to demand receipts because it's "store policy." I said fine, but where is that policy posted? I didn't see this policy when I shopped earlier. Manager replies, and I kid you not, "we have so many policies that there's just not room to post them all.

Bullshit Procedure for NO APPARENT REASON- By Lisa R.

I was waiting in a long line at Walmart when I got a call on my cell that my son was locked out of our house (it was like 40 and windy out) I was trying to hurry so I stuck my recipt in my pants pocket (without realizing I had). When I get to the door some guy in a wheel chair is checking everyones recipt, so I start looking for mine. Needless to say I could not find it and the guy goes do you want me to call a manager and I go No, it's gotta be here. Then I go well you might as well cause I may not find it, then the manager comes over and asks me what lane I was in and goes to get the cashier and the cashier comes and looks over my cart and said it was fine. I was getting frustrated and I know it showed. The part that made me so mad was the only thing out of bags was dog food, cat litter and some pop. What is this recipt thing all about because they dont really even look at it. I am going to cut down on my WalMart shopping as much as I can!!! |
Not a Fan of Being Stopped for a Receipt- By Greg B.
Glen Burnie, Maryland Store #688
Submitted on Mar 20, 2008
I purchased two box fans and two extension cords and paid for them at a normal manned checkout lane. As I made my way to the exit the person in front of me was stopped for a receipt check and I went around that mess. I was almost to the door and I hear "Sir!" "Sir!" I turn around and the clerk says I have to check your receipt. I ask her if they treat all of their customers like thieves? Both the clerk and the detained customer look at me like I'm crazy. I turn back around and continue out the store. |

A Good Example of Walmart Disobedience! - By Walter V.
Geneseo, NY- Store #1966
Submitted on Feb 7, 2008
Purchased $98.03 of general food items, discounted wrench set, and 2 cartons of soda. Upon leaving the store, the alarms sounded and I was immediately asked for my reciept. I politely refused and continue toward the exit, when the door greeter grasp my cart and held it so I could not leave. I politely asked him to remove his hands, and allow me to depart, as I did not intend to show my receitp. He refused and I told him to call his manager or the police. He would do neither, and continued to hold my cart. I left him holding the cart and went to customer service and asked to see a manager. The manager could not understand why I would not show my receipt, and I informed him that it was within my rights, and he too could call the police if he so desired. He went with me to the cart and the cart was still being held by the greeter. He informed him to let me go, and that was it. No "I'm sorry" or anything. I feel I was in the right and standing up for our rights are important. I got the feeling that the store manager sided with the greeter, and that I am just a pain, and maybe even a criminal. |
Diaper Bag Danger - By Missy
Portland, Texas- Store #5460
Submitted on Feb 2, 2008
Actually it was worse than checking my receipt. I walked in the store with my three kids and a diaper bag was in the bottom of the cart. The greeter actually stopped me before, yes before I even began to shop, and asked me to please take my diaper bag back to my car because they were no longer permitting diaper bags over a certain size in the store. I was so mad I asked to speak with a manager. Three kids, the two younger ones were both under two at the time. So all the Mom's out there realize how essential a diaper bag is at those ages especially when you are shopping. Anyay,a manager came out and verified the new poilcy was true. I called every woman I knew and had them call everyone they knew. we all made calls to that store. The manager I spoke to the second time I called to complain said she did not know what I was talking about they had no such policy. So not only did I get turned away at the door, they tried to make me feel like I was just a confused idiot! |
From the horse's mouth- By David.

I was a cart attendant at wal-mart for almost a year and when ever wal-mart didn't scheduel enough door greeters we got to come inside and play the part, when door greeting your given a rough, very fast explanation of what to do, at first i checked reciepts, checked bags, and escorted customers back through the doors. For the short while i did this the only explanation i was given was simply, "to make sure all items were paid for..." which to me isn't a good excuse, greeting them as they enter is one thing but to suspect them and search their bags was another.
I gave up on checking bags because it made me feel like an asshole, then it got to the point where i wasn't even checking reciepts for the simple fact that i really didn't have a reason to, i could plainly see that the customer had just come from a register. so whats the point of checking them? i didn't want to make anyone feel like they had stole something. even the regular door greeters got to the point to where they didn't care, only the ones that followed every rule to a "T" would check every reciept, every bag everytime. it was quite annoying when as an employee i would be checked after buying something to drink, i quit a week ago for the simple fact that i hated getting up a 6 in the morning to push carts for 8 hours a day. so to those fighting them, you have my support. |
Profiled In Pajamas- By Amanda.
Scarborough, Maine Walmart - Store #1788
Submitted on December 30, 2007
I worked over hours, busting my tail to make my children's Christmas exciting along with the hugs, kisses and loving embraces. I was very tired so, I went out in my pajama's and a baseball cap. I spent over $400 dollars, and was very excited to bring them home to wrap. A woman wearing very nice clothing went through the doors without being asked if she had a receipt, she beeped and kept walking. Another gentleman dressed nicely walked through the doors without being asked with a cart full of items, he didn't beep. I come to go out and long and behold I am being stopped asking, if I could produce my receipt. My partner happened to run out to pull the car up and she had the separate receipt for 3 items, we paid separate because those items were for my niece. I told the worker that my partner in fact had the separate receipt, and she wouldn't let me leave, as four other well dressed people continued out the door without being harassed.
Then the embarrassment starts, the door lady along with a manager came over and made me pull out every item to check it to see if it was on my receipt. Keep in mind I didn't even get a chance to go through the doors to for them to see if I would beep. The items that I couldn't prove were taken, and they wouldn't let me leave to get my partner. After 15 minutes of this embarrassing episode, my partner finally comes in to see what the hold up was. She produced the receipt and they checked, and they said we were free to go. People walking out the door without being harassed continued as my humiliation continued. Having to re-bag all my own items without any apologies, except for " Ma'am I am just doing my job"... Needless to say it ruined a great portion of my day, not to mention my self esteem. I am very thankful my children were not with me..So, I went to customer service, and returned every item that was purchased and have not been to Wal-Mart since, and I refuse to ever go again. |
Elderly Harassment - By Anonymous.
Biddeford, Maine Walmart, Submitted on December 29, 2007
Although I have experienced this many times, I never thought about it being a bad thing, until I was at the Walmart in Biddeford last week and witnessed a man in his eighties being chased by 2 employees and physically grabbed by the arm for simply not hearing them ask for his receipt.
This man was clearly embarrassed and confused, after all, he had just purchased his items.
After making that scene, and drawing the attention of over 100 people who were either outside the store, on their way out, or on their way in, they waited for him to hand them the receipt, looked at it for, no joke, less than 1 second, and marked it with a high lighter marker.
That was it. A huge scene, terrify an old man, just to mark it without checking or anything. What a ridiculous thing to do. |
Holiday Accusations - By Rob P.
Sanford, Maine Walmart - Submitted on December 29, 2007
The holiday seems to be the worst time for this violation. It seems that Walmart is so concerned about losing money, they would rather call everyone a thief, instead of spending a little more on non-intrusive security.
I was at Walmart in my little town, and was accosted. First the lady at the register told me to keep my receipt out, as they were checking them at the door. I asked why, knowing the answer. "The just want to check your receipt" was the most I could get out of her.
So I put my receipt in my pocket, and walked to the door. A woman asked me to see my receipt, and I said "What for?". "I need to check your receipt". I again asked "what for? - are you accusing me of stealing after I spent over $170 here today alone?". "I'm just doing my job, sir".
Now, that would sound like a response from a worker who wasn't into his job, or the hassles that came with it, but it's the uniform response I get whenever I am asked for my receipt and they are challenged. I think they sit in meetings and are told to tell that to the customer to get them to feel compassion for the person at the door, but they still get their receipt check.
I walk out most of the time, ignoring the door person, even if they are yelling at me to stop. I am concerned at what drastic measures they may take if I continue. I have read horror stories all over the web about this issue.
I hope ignoring and arguing is a practice more people get into this year, so their policies have no effect. |
